It was an unassuming apartment complex in Shibuya, most of the tenants were asleep, most, safe for a few nightbirds. One of these nightbirds was Jacob Peeters. It had been some time since the incident, and he had experimented extensively with the information presented to him. What eh found out was quite worrisome.
Firstly, every night, at the turn of midnight, the world would seemingly fgreeze in place. People temporarily morphed into coffins, and the streets were overtaken by an otherworldly greenish glow. electronics of all kinds would stop working during this time. The period would always last for exactly one hour, whereupon normal time resumed
Secondly, during this abbarant hour, strange creatures emerged on the streets. they were worrisome beings. They varied greatly in appearance. Some were mostly humanoid, others were like animated objects, and still others laughed in the face of whatever there was to know of normal anatomy. What all connected them though, was the fact that each and every one of them wore a mask somewhere on their bodies.
Thirdly, for some reason, he, unlike other humans, did not morph into a coffin. He had seen others that exhibited that peculiar quirk, but they were impossible to interview on the matter on account of very likely being dead.
for the most part, Jacob had survived the nights by tightly locking the door and somewhat fearfully counting down the seconds until the world returned back to the normal cityscape of tokyo. Tonight, that would change however. He had experimented with the strange being he found himself able to summon forth, and found that it allowed him to analyze the shadowy creatures outside to some degree. It wasn't quite clear what this creature linked to jacob was, but he was thankful enough that it wasn't of an agressive disposition towards him.
He had discreetly purchased a small firearm from a rather shady man in a back alley not long after he had first experienced the dark hour. He didn't initially intend to use it for any other reason than self defence, but Jacob's curiosity had won out over his caution, and thus, he walked forth, unlocked his door, and moved out towards the outside.
Curiously, the interior of the apartment complex was devoid of the shadow creatures tonight. There had been some tense moments on earlier nights where he had been able to hear the beings scratch and walk about out in the hallway, but tonight, the hallways were oddly silent.
And then he stepped forth out into the street, there was still an eerie silence. He hadn't been outside during the darkness up until now, and so he hadn't yet been hit by the crushing silence that took over the world during this time. There was nothing to hear, no cars in the distance, no streetlights buzzing. No noisy neighbours argueing. simply silence.
And then, out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw something move. He readjusted his walking stick to face the disturbance, hoping it wouldn't be one of the alrger creatures he ahd observed out here. To his surprise, it was something completely different. A rather strange oval-shaped construct of some kind. Jacob stepped closer to investigate. It appeared a circular... hole in space of some kind. He looked at it's side and saw it wasn't supported by anything. For some reason, Jacob felt it a good idea to touch it. As he did so, his finger slid into it, it felt like a small layer of liquid of some kind, followed by another swirld of cold night air.
Jacob breathed deeply, and took a step forward. He was now halfway through the portal, with his head. It took a moment for him to realize what he was seeing. It was still the same familiar neighbourhood, but rather radically altered. plant life had overgrown the buildings and the streets, and a thick canopy covered up what little light the moon and stars gave. Jacob could swear he could hear giggling and whispering coming from the denser plant life.
Deciding there was no immediate harm in steeping further, Jacob once more took a step. He was now completely through the portal, and he was looking around the place. It seemed rather peaceful at first glance, but there was still a faint hint of sinister intent that permeated the place. As such, jacob kept his guard up.
