Name: Sayu Nakano
Age: Twenty-six
Date of Birth: July 8th
Birthplace: Minato, Tokyo; Japan
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Openly bisexual
Face Claim: Tohsaka Rin – Fate/Stay Night
Appearance:
Height: 5'6
Distinguishing Features:
Class: Veteran Persona-user
Arcana: The Magician
Occupation: Freelance musical synthesizer, shareholder, and “Undercover Cop”
Starting Equipment:
Though Sayu has quite a few guns, the guns themselves are mostly the means of discharge. Her real “weapon” is her high-quality ammunition, typically in the form of .40 caliber S&W rounds. The ammunition is Level 4 and is, obviously, Pierce-based.
Additionally, she has a reinforced coat with durable fabrics weaved in, designed to be both durable and fashionable. It is a Level 3 armor.
Personality:
Once upon a time, Sayu had actually been what some could have considered a sort of asshole. After the loss of her voice, the reaction she received from people ruined her trust in people, and she became extraordinarily negative and cynical regarding others, finding it hard to trust them. Through the events in China, though, Sayu managed to progress and grow. Though there was plenty wrong with her, she's developed into the person she is today.
The present Sayu is a kind enough individual. She watches out for others around her, provided she has some degree of a tie with them. Perhaps because of her age, she's developed some degree of maternal instincts towards those younger than her. Though not quite overbearing, she has had some protective “big sister” moments with some few people. Compared to her once-apathetic attitude towards others, it's pretty much night and day.
One trait that has persevered from the days of her cruder self is her honesty. Though, where she was almost violently blunt before, she's learned to take a much gentler step with her honesty. Gentleness and discretion are two things she's made an effort to properly utilize with what she says- sometimes, it's not the message, but the words and tone that make something offensive or not. Of course, while she does try to be gentle, sometimes, when something is just too wrong, she'll occasionally speak on reflex. On these occasions, she can be very critical. Additionally, she gets embarrassed about it afterward. Only occasionally does she actually become apologetic, though.
As one might expect from a person that ousted most efforts from others for the better portion of her hormone-ridden teenage years, Sayu is pretty self-reliant. She works well with others, of course, but if there's a lack of manpower, she'll find a way to make something work. In times of strict scheduling, with a lack of people, she's prone to taking larger portions of work during the division of labor, as well. Sometimes, it's excessive, but she at least addresses situations responsibly. Despite her tendencies, she does, at least, not take on more than she can reasonably handle, provided the circumstances do not change.
All in all, she's a capable, respectable individual that shows an adequate level of concern, interest, and respect in others- perhaps a little more, depending on the occasion. Of course, she's not without her failings. And it's not like she's completely gotten out of her acidic habits, even after a near decade of neglect. There are three things that can, and will, provoke her to no end and can cause her to become little more than a howling banshee. Figuratively. Given, you know, she has no voice.
First and foremost is shitty taste in (her genre of) music. She's accepting of diversity in interests, so she typically doesn't care about whether a person doesn't like her genre of music. If they do, though? She can get passionate. Casuals beware, your kind will be rent asunder with a silent howl. Fortunately, she's not one to get violent over things like interests, even when angry. Otherwise, some people would be injured.
The second thing can be summarized as liars and lying. While doesn't get terribly loud- again, figuratively- she does frown upon these actions and their perpetrators. They stand on the polar opposite of a situation, and will be irreconcilable on that situation so long as they adhere to such standards. The third thing? People with the name “Ferdinand”. Don't ask. Additionally, don't be named “Ferdinand”.
With those she knows, she can be particularly playful, even outright flirty. While not a romantic, she does hope to find someone worthwhile to have as a life-long partner, and she's not one to discriminate based on what she considers to be trivialities. She's faithful to those she cares for, and her work ethic carries over to relationships, as well.
In the past, she was “complex”, if one were to word it kindly. “Difficult” would be the term most would use. At present, she's just a person with a layered personality. Vicious on the outside, if your name is Ferdinand, soft on the outside otherwise, and sweet at the core. Sayu's not an extraordinarily hard person to understand, not anymore, but she's, by no means, simple, either.
Likes:
~Spicy Food~
Since what has seemed like the beginning of her life, Sayu has thoroughly enjoyed spicy foods, and has no problems eating the stuff. Very seldom does she encounter something too powerful for her tongue. Some, during her “dark age”, suggested that the venom on her tongue probably offset the spiciness, as a joke, but she really does get that kick. And she thoroughly enjoys it, too.
~Clean Environments~
Though not the OCD, germaphobic girl she used to be, once upon a time, Sayu does still enjoy working in clean environments, regardless of what the work in question might be. In some cases, a clean environment is mandatory due to the nature of the work. For everything else, there's Master Card she can just appreciate tidiness. She will still organize shit in odd ways, though.
~Mobile Devices~
Whether it's a phone, tablet, laptop, or handheld gaming device, Sayu has always had an affinity for mobile things. This likely stems from her dependence on her phone for a voice, but it's just a thorough love for her. Plus, gaming on the go. Pretty sweet, no lie.
~Reading~
Contrary to what one may guess, going by her interest in techy things, Sayu actually does enjoy reading novels and manga. Particular genres she enjoys include romance, murder mystery, and horror.
~Guns~
“You should've been born as an American”, one joking asshole commented when they realized how much Sayu enjoyed firearms. From firing them to customizing them, the young woman does have an intense love for her guns. She's also very forward in terms of her feelings on her concealed and carry. Her ideal gun? Loaded, chambered, and safety off. The only damn safety she needs is trigger discipline, which she has plenty of.
~Modding~
As can be gathered from the above, Sayu enjoys customizing and modifying any number of things, not just guns. The primary things she fiddles with, excluding the guns, are computers and game consoles, but she's prone to fiddling with things if she has resources and time both available.
Dislikes:
~Messiness~
Whether it's greasy and otherwise messy food, dirty and dusty work spaces, or what have you, Sayu does have a tendency to avoid these things. While she used to have an extraordinary aversion to them, bordering on psychological disorder, she's gotten much better. Still, if she had to choose between dirty and clean, she'd lean towards the latter, no questions asked.
~Shorthand~
While it's an extension of the fact that her voice is still a text-to-speech program, Sayu has a very vocal distaste for shorthand, “Leet Speak”, and other nonsense, regardless of the language. She respects language enough to write things out properly, regardless of the language in question, and she gets easily annoyed when others don't show it the same respect, not that it shows that easily.
~Tech-illiterates~
As a person with an extreme fondness of technology, for various reasons, the one type of person Sayu has the most problems getting along with are those with a deficiency of technological understanding. She's not asking for IT-level understanding. She just wants to not have to explain every single term. It's the twenty-first century, damn it.
~Ferdinand~
The given name, the man, the history. Coincidentally, this'll probably bleed over to anybody with the given name “Ferdinand”.
History:
Sayu grew up is a fairly nice environment. Her parents were loaded thanks to smart moves with purchasing stocks. As a result, a few small, but extremely lucrative and productive companies were under the Nakano banner. Sayu had whatever she wanted. Nice clothes. Good food. Attention, love, affection. At school, she was a social flower that was the center of attention. She had dreams of singing, as well as the God-given talent to follow through.
And then that single most important thing to her failed.
Turns out, Sayu's vocal cords were very weak. All the hardcore practice the girl went through? Finished 'em. Fatality. Flawless victory. Dreams that were soaring came crashing down- a nose dive with a perfect ten as the victims shattered on the ground. Powder that scattered in the wind- nothing left. The girl's chances of recovering her voice were close to zero outside of natural healing or advances in technology beyond what existed. In either case, the girl's chances of being able to sing while she still had means or will were gone.
Around that time, she was ostracized at school due to her differences with those around her. Even her “friends” were quick to leave her alone outside of harassment and teasing. It was just proof that they swarmed to her like flies to honey because it seemed like an easy way to get free gifts. If Sayu couldn't talk, then the return-on-investment was really not worth it anymore- too much effort to stay on her good side.
Anger, disappointment, and mistrust wracked through the girl. Her goals had been ripped away from her. Her “friends” had left her. She, really and truly, didn't have much going for her at that point. No amount of money would fix that. For a time, she thought to make her presence known by excelling. Grades, athleticism, appearance. She lacked a voice, but she improved those three fields as best she could. And it worked, to a degree. There were those that sought out assistance in their learning. Others wanted to compete with her. The rest just liked what they saw. It took her a while, but she realized- again- that nobody really cared about her.
It was during this time that the companies under the Nakano family's jurisdiction began working on high-powered phones and complex text-to-speech programs with more “human” capabilities. Eventually, it was the prototype of both that found its way into the girl's hands. It was not her voice, but she could speak. The software was adaptive, capable of learning emotional inflections, and, with time, it was really as if the girl had developed a new voice.
She didn't discard her growth, but she did use her new-found voice to scatter the annoying pests that stuck to her like flies on honey. She had not the time, the will, the energy, nor the patience to deal with two-faced brats. It was with events like that that Sayu gradually became a cynical and jaded person- betrayal and discarding, followed by association with hopes of fame. Neither was what she desired. She wanted a friend, and people just didn't seem to be willing to give her that. She came to rely on herself.
At the age of fifteen, she was in the middle of a small-scale incident. It would never be recorded or reported. With no functioning technology, how could one hope to report it? It occurred in a small city at Hokkaido. What had been intended as a small break from school and her slowly growing synthesizing gig had turned into a literal bout with hell. In three days, a veritable war had broken out. Sayu, and a few others including her bodyguard at the time, had awakened to the power of Persona and fought off the enemies. Sludgy beasts and odd, inhuman entities were the enemy of the day. All manner of chaos had occurred, but nothing was recorded.
The official story was that a blackout and riot had occurred. And both statements were true. Plenty went down, and she and the other Users sat down and discussed what they thought about it all. It was chalked up as a success. Nobody knew what the exact cause of it all was, but they had succeeded in driving the things away. That was enough for some of them, it seemed. Sayu? Not so much. But she couldn't very well do much on her own, now could she?
Fast forward to the age of eighteen. Sayu had graduated from high school, and her art of being a DJ and synthesizer had developed to the point of mastery. It was likely because she dedicated herself to it the same way she had dedicated her time and energy to singing once upon a time. However, it was high time she took another vacation. This is what led her to touring out to China. She had learned Mandarin, instead of English, during her high school years. It was reasonably nearby, and there was an interesting little coastal city that a few of her assistants had made her interested in. If nothing else, she could get a foreign following, too. That would have been nice.
Only, things weren't quite that simple. If the events in Hokkaido were the first experience with her Persona, then her time in China was the second. Unlike Hokkaido, though, the situation didn't resolve itself in a matter of days. Nor did it take only a few weeks. The events there took a few months. It was a slow, gradual situation, one that took place on the side of society that most never paid attention to. It was there that she became fairly familiar with the actual concepts of demons and the like. Shadows didn't make nearly as much of a splash there as they had in Hokkaido, for some reason or another.
China was an interesting period in her life. It wasn't just because of the combat, but because of things she gained and the things she lost. She had an extreme hatred for both Shadows and Demons, and part of her never quite put down exactly why until certain things fell in place before her. They were the negativity of humans. It was the same nonsense she had to deal with when she lost her voice. These things were actual byproducts of that sort of behavior- the lies, the two-facedness, the disgusting bits all stewed together. That was why she hated them so much, why she tried to eradicate them so thoroughly.
In truth, she hated that they were there- that they were a necessity. She wanted to fix that. She wanted a world where these things were not normal, where people could be honest, true with each other. She had been going at things the wrong way all along, it seemed. If anything, she'd just been feeding that negativity all along. Her realization of that, as well as her renewed conviction to change the way the world worked, led to her Persona evolving. Rather than a being of wrath, she had obtained Inari.
The China Incident, as Sayu referred to it later, ended shortly after her nineteenth birthday. Fortunately, those involved in the incident had a bit more of a proactive response than those back at Hokkaido. The all exchanged contact information and planned on researching and investigating into various fields. This was also an excellent boon for Sayu for multiple reasons. Why? Because she then had friends in powerful places, both in China and Japan.
Life went by without much of note in the following years, despite Sayu's efforts. A trip to America, and the preparations before hand, had led to her to learn English. It was effectively a nice vacation, with a few minor things occurring. It was also around that time that her guard, having concluded that she had grown enough and that it was time for them to improve themselves, officially resigned. They did plan to return one day, though.
Fast forward to the present, and Sayu had utilized her connections to get special privileges for the sake of her fighting power. It had been merely preparatory when she got in touch with her contacts in the upper echelons of Japan. She was officially a member of the Japanese Criminal Investigation Bureau, specifically as a member on an undercover assignment. Thanks to the technicalities, she could officially own and carry a handgun.
It was only when she had returned to Tokyo after a trip around the country that that bit of preparation truly came to be valuable, though. Midnight struck and her motorcycle came to a stop on its own. The events were eerily similar to those of some few years back. She was honestly hoping it was just a coincidence up until a small group of nasty things had appeared, apparently attracted to her. With the combination of her marksmanship and Inari's flames and light, the bunch had been annihilated.
The most pressing issue wasn't finding out how to neutralize the issue, but how long it had been going on and how many there were on the humans' side this time around. After that, the witch hunt could begin in proper.
OOC Name: Alice
Notes:
Though it's taken a bit of a backseat to her primary means of money-gathering, as well as her supernatural inclinations, Sayu still does musical work, from synthesizing to DJing where commissioned. She doesn't take many jobs anymore, though. She's got plenty of a legacy, though, that's for damn sure. Some of her most popular works from back in the day included “Flat Chest Fever”, “The Nurse Was a Trap”, “Yan-yan Teatime”, “The Legend of Sister's Panties”, and “Birth of a Legend: Five Finger Dominator”. Needless to say, she's not ashamed. She produced what was asked of her. That was all that mattered.
Though not nearly as deep in the rabbit hole as before, Sayu, for a great long while, was in the otaku sub-culture due to her desire to connect with her fanbase. She still cosplays on occasion, and she's not ashamed of it in the least.
Though her presence on the force is mostly a(n illegal) formality for the sake of getting her access to handguns, she has assisted in three arrests to date, two directly, one indirectly.
During, and shortly after, the “China Incident”, Sayu got a small growth spurt. Her father jokingly asked if she found a growth elixir. She jokingly asked, while smiling, if he needed some.
Originally, Sayu had gone through great efforts to synchronize the movements of her mouth with the syllables spat out by her phone. This was to create an illusion that she could still speak, and was spurred on by her sensitivity regarding her mute state. She's since grown up, and instead uses her mouth for better things. Now she really can “talk with her mouth full”.
Though the ties that bind them vary in strength, she knows a few other Users from the previous incidents in her life and keeps in touch with them. During the adventure in China, she and four others in particular formed an excellent party that really did some damage on the enemies. She took the magical offense, her guard took care of the physical offense. One was a mix of magic and physical, capable of hitting hard and fast when backed up properly, while the other two were full support and mixed offense and support respectively. It was a bleak time, sure, but, honestly? She couldn't say she disliked being with them all.
Despite her complete denial of it, she does, in fact, miss her bodyguard. After spending so much time together, it was kind of sad to see them go, even if she doesn't realize that just yet.
Since he attempts at drawing attention way back when she first lost her voice, Sayu managed to get fit- after all, she had to come out on top in sports and whatnot for at least a little bit. Since then, though she doesn't go to an excess with it, she has always done a small workout every day to keep fit. These workouts include small jogs, sit-ups, push-ups, and pull-ups. Just enough to keep undesired fat off, as well as keeping her fit and limber enough to stay on the move during an “outing”.
Though her primary weapon is currently a firearm, she has been known to use a nasty ax kick on occasion. Usually, though, the target is a human. Annoying humans are prone to receive this. Occasionally, they'll also be pelted by “the fluffy cannonball”.
Persona: Inari
Appearance: It should go to note that Inari stands at roughly 4'0 right now.
Persona Lore:
In Shinto mythology, Inari was recognized as the god of many things, including foxes, fertility, agriculture, industry, and prosperity and success. Additionally, Inari was viewed as a patron for swordsmiths and merchants. Inari's gender varied based on regional lore, and could be male, female, or androgynous. Due to this deity's closeness with foxes, it was believed by many to be a kitsune. This is the form it takes as Sayu's Persona.
